Our Story

Our story: We are proud to offer a quiet, private, and tranquil salon environment where you can truly relax and enjoy your experience. As a dedicated curly hair salon (that is family operated), we are passionate about caring for, embracing, and enhancing your natural curls.

Located in Moorooka, Brisbane, Harlequin Hair is an eclectic, family-focused salon (and family operated salon) committed to delivering the experience you deserve. We are honoured to be one of the most experienced dedicated curly hair salons in the area, specialising in curl care, colour, and creative expression.

Our online store features all the products we use in-salon, available for purchase both online and in person. As curl specialists, our focus is on helping you embrace your natural texture, which means we do not offer straightening, braiding, extensions, wigs, smoothing treatments, or perming services.

We proudly stock and use a wide range of Curly Girl–approved and curl-friendly products. Our team is committed to ongoing education, regularly participating in advanced training to stay up to date with the latest techniques in hairdressing and curly hair care.

From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident in your stylist’s expertise. Your hair is in the hands of experienced professionals who truly understand curls.

We also recognise that no single method suits everyone. While we work with the Curly Girl Method, we also embrace other approaches, including the Ouidad Method and traditional curl care techniques. Most importantly, we are open to working with your method—because your hair is unique, and your routine should be too.

Steve – Senior Stylist & Curl & Colour Specialist

Steve began his hairdressing career in 2001 in Ipswich, building a strong foundation in both technical skill and client care. In 2007, he co-founded Shear Image, and in 2019, the salon evolved into what is now proudly known as Harlequin Hair.

With over two decades of industry experience, Steve has been working with L’Oréal Professionnel since 2003 and is recognised as one of the most experienced L’Oréal Professionnel colourists in Moorooka. His passion for colour excellence led him to complete the prestigious L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Degree in 2013—an advanced program designed for colourists dedicated to mastering their craft at the highest level.

Steve’s journey into curly hair began between 2017 and 2019, where he immersed himself in learning, practising, and researching curl-specific techniques, including the Curly Girl Method. Since then, he has continued to expand his expertise, focusing on both curly hair cutting and advanced colouring.

His approach to curls is highly personalised, specialising in curl-by-curl cutting (and open to all methods including cutting curls the traditional way or Ouidad method), ensuring each client’s natural pattern is respected and enhanced. Steve has also undertaken specialised training in curl techniques, further refining his skills through industry-led education.

Ongoing Education & Advanced Training

Steve is committed to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of the industry:

• 2021 – Completed advanced online training with L’Oréal Professionnel UK in the care, cutting, and styling of all curl types

• 2026 – Completed L’Oréal Professionnel Curl Keys, an advanced program covering:

• In-depth curl structure and behaviour

• Advanced cutting techniques

• Diffusing and styling methods

• A cutting approach influenced by the Ouidad method (basin preparation, wet cutting, diffusing, and detailed dry curl-by-curl refinement)

• 2026 – Completed Matrix Professional Silver Linings, specialising in transitioning coloured hair to natural grey, in collaboration with renowned colourist Jack Martin

Steve’s philosophy is simple: no two heads of hair are the same. His goal is to combine technical expertise with a personalised approach, helping every client feel confident in their natural texture (from 2A to 4C curls) and colour.

Tanya – Senior Stylist & Curl & (Future) Scalp Specialist 

Tanya brings over 19 years of hairdressing experience to the salon, with a career built around both professional passion and family life. During her time away from the salon, she dedicated herself to raising her three children and supporting her family business—experiences that have shaped her warm, grounded, and client-focused approach. Tanya & Steve are also cousins.

Tanya specialises in curly, coily and wavy hair, with a strong focus on helping clients understand, manage, and embrace their natural texture.

In July 2020, she completed advanced training in curly hair cutting and care through Purely Curls and Curly Hair Education Australia—widely recognised leaders in curly hair education in Queensland. This training provided her with in-depth knowledge and practical skills, including:

• Dry cutting techniques to enhance natural curl shape

• Understanding why curly hair requires specialised care

• Effective cleansing, hydration, and styling methods

• Selecting clean, curl-friendly products that support healthy, vibrant curls

Tanya’s cutting approach is inspired by DevaCurl and Purely Curls techniques, with a strong emphasis on curl-by-curl refinement and personalised shaping to suit each client’s unique pattern and lifestyle from 2A to 4C type curls.

With her own naturally wavy (2B–2C) hair, Tanya has a personal understanding of the curly hair journey. This allows her to connect with clients on a deeper level, offering not just technical expertise, but practical, real-life advice.

Ongoing Education & Advanced Training

2026 - Completing L'Oreal Professionnel Specialised Trichology Course (ends in October). This is a 4 part program. That delves inside the scalp as to why ingredients can affect the scalp, cause irritation, recommend ingredients/products, the biology and roles of our scalp and why we may have hair loss, dandruff, alopecia, balding,psoriasis and more. Able to diagnose scalp & hair conditions.
