Why do we have Pet Rescues on our online shop?

26th March 2026: I’ve (Steve) just caught another stray cat. Sadly, it will most likely be euthanised when handed over to council, as most rescues are already at capacity and I’m unable to keep it. It’s a needless and preventable end to a life. 🥹😢

In some ways, this may be the only peace this animal will ever know. It will no longer have to hunt for food, suffer from ticks or disease, risk snake bites, or be prey to eagles or goannas. It won’t have to dodge traffic, endure extreme heat or storms, or search endlessly for shelter. And it will no longer contribute to the loss of our native wildlife.

But this situation should never have existed in the first place.

This cat’s life likely began as the result of an un-desexed parent—whether escaped, abandoned, or born in the wild—and has simply been surviving ever since. That is its instinct. It is not its fault.

The hardest part in all of this is that these are innocent animals, doing exactly what they are biologically driven to do. Yet they are the ones that ultimately pay the price. 😢

Current approaches often focus on keeping cats indoors, but this alone does not solve the problem. Cats escape. They breed. They survive. And the cycle continues.

The real issue is uncontrolled breeding.

There needs to be stronger, proactive measures in place. Breeding should be limited to registered, regulated breeders, and desexing should be made widely accessible—potentially free or heavily subsidised for a defined period—to break this cycle.

Cats can breed from as young as four months old, and inbreeding is common, which only accelerates the problem. Without intervention, this cycle will continue indefinitely—impacting both the cats themselves and our native wildlife.

We live near a national park/forest, and every March we see more kittens appearing. We do what we can—trapping and handing them over to council when there is space—but often there isn’t. And in those moments, it’s hard to know what the right thing to do is.

This isn’t just frustrating—it’s heartbreaking.

I’m not writing this out of anger alone, but out of sadness and a genuine hope that something better can be done—for the animals, for the community, and for our environment.

In Feb 2026 there was a litter of approx 6 kitten aged approx 4 months old seen (unsuccessful of being trapped).  Also seen: 1 Ginger adult, 1 black and white adult, 1 white with ginger on it adult, 1 black adult.

(We have and care for 10 cats in a large enclosure, desexed, we can't take anymore ourselves). Taking an innocent animal to a pound is one of the hardest things to do 😭 & Steve absolutely hates doing it.
